Privacy Off is an experimental video and an attempt to tackle a topic which concerns all of us and which points out the complexity ofmapping out the space of the rising Internet dystopia. Imagining the Internet as this magical tool that helps us widen our individual freedom, we have been caught up by quite the opposite. The social networks and the Internet in general have become the most sophisticated form of surveillance which have succeeded in transforming us from mere “users” into “products”. Never have we ever been so controlled. What is more not only are we controlled on the outside, but above all this control is directed towards our own selves, towards our feelings, worldviews and thoughts before they have even happened or conceived in us. We live as part of the “culture of oblivion” that allows us to know “everything” just by clicking a mere button. The blithe sharing of so many details of our lives has become a segment of our day-to-day lives and the Internet has turned into our nature, an extension to our memory and the source of our knowledge. Where has our privacy gone? Does it still exist at all? Who is the owner of our memories and intimacy? Does the mutual “public” code dictate the red line of “privacy”? These are just a few of the questions that we must ask ourselves and Privacy Offmerelyintroduces them to us, possibly challenging us to consider and think about them. The one who controls our present, holds our past in the palm of his hand and will undoubtedly determine our future!
